Opening Hymn: “Go Down, Moses” #448
The United Methodist Hymnal
© 1989 The United Methodist Publishing House
Words and Music: African American spiritual, adapted and arranged by William Farley Smith, Exodus 3:7-12
“1. When Israel was in Egypt’s land, let my people go;
oppressed so hard they could not stand, let my people go.
Go down (go down) Moses (Moses)
way down in Egypt’s land;
tell old Pharaoh to let my people go!
2. “Thus saith the Lord,” bold Moses said,
let my people go;
“if not, I’ll smite your firstborn dead,”
let my people go.
Go down (go down) Moses (Moses)
way down in Egypt’s land;
tell old Pharaoh to let my people go!
3. No more shall they in bondage toil,
let my people go;
let them come out with Egypt’s spoil,
let my people go.
Go down (go down) Moses (Moses)
way down in Egypt’s land;
tell old Pharaoh to let my people go!
4. We need not always weep and mourn,
let my people go;
and wear those slavery chains forlorn,
let my people go.
Go down (go down) Moses (Moses)
way down in Egypt’s land;
tell old Pharaoh to let my people go!
5. Come, Moses, you will not get lost,
let my people go;
stretch out your rod and come across,
let my people go.
Go down (go down) Moses (Moses)
way down in Egypt’s land;
tell old Pharaoh to let my people go!”

Offertory Hymn: “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” #2158
in The Faith We Sing
Words & Music: Anonymous, based on James 4:8. Public domain.
“1. I am weak, but thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
as I walk, let me walk close to thee.
Just a closer walk with thee,
grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
daily walking close to the thee:
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
“2. Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee.
Just a closer walk with thee,
grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
daily walking close to the thee:
let it be, dear Lord, let it be.”
“3. When my feeble life is o’er,
time for me will be no more;
guide me gently, safely o’er
to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore.
Just a closer walk with thee,
grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
daily walking close to the thee:
let it be, dear Lord, let it be.”
Prayer after receiving: Pastor Juan
God of all creation, as we offer our gifts to you this day, we remember the questions Jesus put to his disciples, “Who do people say that I am? But who do you say that I am?” We pray that we might be ready to answer with our lips, but also with our lives and with our gifts: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” In his holy name, we pray. Amen.
Hymn of Preparation: “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness” #2120 in The Faith We Sing
© 1978 James K. Manley
Refrain: “Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.”
1. “You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons you called to each thing:
wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings. (Refrain)
2. You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people with a law and a land;
and when they were blinded with their idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes. (Refrain)
3. You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,
then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still;
and down in the city you called once again,
when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind. (Refrain)
4. You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes,
from the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams,
our women see visions, our men clear their eyes,
with bold new decisions your people arise.” (Refrain)
Old Testament Reading: Exodus 1:8-2:10 Chris Morris
