Opening Prayer: ………….…….……….…Melrose D.
Lord God, heavenly Father, in you, all things are new. Today, we begin a new week, a new
opportunity to see your work in our lives. As we look forward to what lies ahead, let us rejoice in the
blessings of the past week. Remind us of the mercies You showed us, the gifts You gave us, and the ways
You used us in Your service. With gratitude, we take with us that which was good and leave behind the
mistakes, the sins, the flaws, and the failings that Your Son erased on the cross. As we stride into the
new week before us, strengthen our hearts to share Your love, our spirits to seek Your will, and our hands
to do Your work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
From Portals of Praise Vol. 1 2024

Opening Hymns:“If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee” #142 UMH
Words Georg Neumark, 1657, Music: Georg Neumark, 1657

1. If thou but suffer God to guide thee, and hope in God
through all thy ways, God will give strength, whate’er betide
thee, and bear thee through the evil days.  Who trusts in
God’s unchanging love builds on the rock that naught can move.

2. Only be still, and wait God’s leisure in cheerful hope, with
heart content to take whate’er thy Maker’s pleasure and all
discerning love hath sent; we know our inmost wants are known,
for we are called to be God’s own.

3.  Sing, pray, and keep God’s ways unswerving; so do thine
own part faithfully, and trust God’s word; though undeserving,
thou yet shall find it true for thee.  God never yet forsook at
need the soul that trusted God indeed.

Old Testament Lesson:……..1 Samuel 8:4-20……..Melrose D.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to govern us.” Samuel prayed to the LORD, and the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. Now then, listen to their voice; only–you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”

So Samuel reported all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.  He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots; and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his courtiers.  He will take one-tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and his courtiers.  He will take your male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work.  He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves.  And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said “No! but we are determined to have a king over us,  so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

Sermon:……..“We Shall Have a King?!”…………..Lusi R.

Closing Hymn:. “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” #127 UMH
Words: William Williams, 1745, Music: John Jughes, 1907

1. Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through
this barren land.  I am weak, but thou art mighty;
hold me with thy powerful hand.  Bread of heaven,
bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more; (want
no more) feed me till I want no more.

2. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing
stream doth flow; let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me
all my journey through.  Strong deliverer, strong
deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield; (strength
and shield) be thou still my strength and shield.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious
fears subside; death of death and hell’s destruction, land
me safe on Canaan’s side.  Songs of praises, songs of
praises, I will ever give to thee; (give to thee) I will
ever give to thee.
