Opening Hymn: “This Is a Day of New Beginnings” # 383 UMH
Words by Brian Wren, Revelations 21:5; Music by Carlton R. Young
© 1983, 1987 Hope Publishing Co
1.This is a day of new beginnings,
time to remember and move on,
time to believe what love is bringing,
laying to rest the pain that’s gone.
2.For by the life and death of Jesus,
God’s mighty Spirit, now as then,
can make for us a world of difference,
as faith and hope are born again.
3.Then let us, with the Spirit’s daring,
step from the past and leave behind
our disappointment, guilt, and grieving,
seeking new paths, and sure to find.
4.Christ is alive, and goes before us
to show and share what love can do.
This is a day of new beginnings;
our God is making all things new.
Psalm Lesson with Response: …………….…Shirley G.
Psalm 1
Liturgist: Blessed are those who do not walk in the counsel
of the wicked;
All: or stand in the way of sinners,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
Liturgist: but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
All: and on God’s law they meditate day and night.
Liturgist: They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
that yield their fruit in season,
and their leaves do not wither.
All: In all that they do, they prosper.
Liturgist: The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff which the wind drives away.
All: Therefore the wicked will not stand in the
judgment; nor sinners in the congregation
of the righteous;
Liturgist: for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
All: but the way of the wicked will perish.
Old Testament Lesson: Ecclesiastes 3: 1-14 ………Shirley G.
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.9 What gain have the workers from their toil? 10 I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. 11 He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; 13 moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. 14 I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him.
Hymn of Preparation: “Borning Cry” #2051 TFWS
Words and Music: John Ylvisaker © 1985 John Ylvisaker
1.I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be
there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you
were baptized, to see your life unfold.
2.I was there when you were but a child, with a
faith to suit you well; in a blaze of light you
wandered off to find where demons dwell.
3.When you heard the wonder of the Word I was
there to cheer you on; you were raised to praise the
living Lord, to whom you now belong.
4.If you find someone to share your time and you
join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your
verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun.
5.In the middle ages of your life, not too
old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you
through the night, complete what I’ve begun.
6.When the evening gently closes in and you
shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have
always been with just one more surprise.
(Repeat verse 1)
1.I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be
there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you
were baptized, to see your life unfold.
New Testament Lesson: 2 Timothy 4:1-5 ….Shirley G.
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2 proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

Song of Sending Forth: “Hymn of Promise” #707 UMH
Words and Music: Natalie Sleeth, 1986 © 1986 Hope Publishing Co.
1.In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
2.There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody;
there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
3.In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing; in our life eternity.
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
